Marc Garneau is Canada's first astronaut, the inaugural commander of the International Space Station and a leading advocate for Canada's participation in the International Space Station. He is also the country's most experienced astronaut, having spent over six hundred hours in space. He has logged more than three hundred hours in space at the time of his retirement in 2005. As Canada's first citizen in space, he has initiated numerous Canadian initiatives, including co-chairing the International Olympic Committee working group on children and sport in space; chairing the Canadian delegation to the United Nations Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space; and co-founding the Canadian Astronaut Scholarship Foundation with Dr. Roberta Bondar.
